Ovarian cancer treatment methods at Asklepios
- Hysterectomy of the uterus with appendages, i.e. the surgeon carries out the excision of the organ, regional lymph nodes, ovaries and all affected tissues sites;
- Chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies and radiotherapy to inhibit the activity of the abnormal cells. High skills of the German doctors allow avoiding the relapses while the widespread process even. If the tumor is inoperable, the combinations of these methods can significantly prolong and improve the well-being;
- Targeted therapy (type of chemotherapy) to inhibit the tumor tissue blood supply;
- Hormone therapy to destruct the stromal cancer cells.
Types of ovarian cancer
There are 3 main types of ovarian carcinoma according to the nature of cell from which it grew:
- Epithelial tumors are growing from the cells lining the outer surface of the ovaries.
- Germ cells cancer arise from the cells that produce ovaries.
- Stromal cells tumor is formed in the cells producing hormones (estrogen, progesterone).
Symptoms and diagnosis of ovarian cancer
Early symptoms of ovarian cancer are absent or non-specific. The signs of a tumor are similar to inflammation of the ovaries or an ovarian cyst.
The signs of ovarian cancer at the later stages:
- enlarged abdomen;
- pain in the lower abdomen;
- pain in the pelvis;
- constant urge to urinate;
- ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity).
Complex diagnostics in top ovarian cancer clinics include:
- genetic test - BRCA1/2 mutation;
- a blood test (for CA-125 and other tumor markers)
- CT scan;
- transvaginal ultrasound;
- MRI;
- biopsy (laparoscopic).
Risk factors
The precise causes of ovarian cancer are not known, but several factors can influence the likelihood of ovarian carcinoma development. Those are:
- hereditary factors - genetics and family history;
- age - 50% of patients diagnosed with this disease are older than 60;
- women without children are more likely to develop ovarian cancer.
Stages of ovarian cancer treatment
- Diagnosis takes up to 2-3 days.
- Surgery in most cases is laparoscopic - through tiny incisions in the abdominal cavity. If there are no complications, a patient can leave the hospital on the same day.
- At later stages, surgery is more complicated and requires 2-5 days postoperative recovery.
- If a patient undergoes a chemotherapy on an inpatient basis, the hospital stay depends on the number of sessions prescribed.
Best ovarian cancer treatment options
Surgery options
In case of localized tumor:
- Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of an ovary.
- Salpingo-oophorectomy. It is a resection of an ovary and its fallopian tube.
- Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is a removal of both ovaries and both fallopian tubes.
In advanced stages:
- Total hysterectomy. It is when ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the uterus are removed.
- Debulking (cytoreduction or cytoreductive surgery) is performed in advanced stage of ovarian cancer and consists of:
- omentectomy (removal of all or part of the abdominal lining);
- lymphadenectomy (lymph nodes dissection);
- total hysterectomy (in some cases).
Ovarian cancer surgery cost
The cost of surgery for ovarian cancer depends on its type and method. For example, hysterectomy is the most expensive procedure and oophorectomy - the cheapest.
Success of surgical treatment depends on the surgeons with experience in this type of procedures. NCCN medical experts (The National Comprehensive Cancer Network) recommend to see not just a surgeon but an oncogynecologist.
Chemotherapy for ovarian cancer
The typical course of chemotherapy for epithelial ovarian cancer involves 3-6 cycles. Medical oncologists usually prescribe Carboplatin and Bevacizumab. Chemotherapy drugs have side effects, depending on the type of drug, the administered amount, and the length of treatment.
Also, “Higher-Dose” chemotherapy and “Dose-Dense” treatment methods can be provided. It is a rapid administration of several different chemotherapy drugs to prevent cancer cells from developing resistance.
Ovarian cancer radiation therapy
Radiotherapy is rarely used as the primary treatment for ovarian carcinoma but rather for treating areas of cancer spread. It can be of 2 types:
- external beam radiation therapy (with CyberKnife device);
- brachytherapy (implantation of radioactive materials into the tumor).
Is proton therapy effective against ovarian cancer?
Proton-beam therapy is most useful for localized cancers that have not spread from the original site. It is not used to treat metastasis. Proton therapy has shown good results in treating malignant tumors of the prostate, brain, head and neck, lung, and gastrointestinal system.
It may be used in some cases of localized ovarian cancer, but this procedure is costly (up to € 2000 for a session) and available only in a few medical facilities, like the Proton Therapy Center in Prague.
Advanced stages treatment options
Targeted therapy
It is the drugs that work on the molecular level destroying proteins that promote the growth of cancer cells. Doctors usually prescribe Bevacizumab (Avastin), Olaparib (Lynparza), Niraparib (Zejula).
Immunotherapy
- Biological Modifier therapy. It is a method aimed to enhance the body’s immune defenses.
- Monoclonal Antibodies. New generation drugs prescribed that help immune system to attack and kill the cancer cells.
Hormone therapy
This method consists of hormone-blocking drugs and is used to treat ovarian stromal tumors.
HIPEC for ovarian cancer
HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) is an injection of a concentrated dose of the chemo drugs (cisplatin and paclitaxel) directly into the abdominal cavity during the surgery. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is only given to some of the women with ovarian cancer that has spread to the abdomen (advanced stages). It has severe side effects but can potentially increase survival rates. Only an oncologist can decide whether to perform this procedure or not.
Bookimed can help you book a consultation with a specialist for a second medical opinion so that you can:
- find out weather HIPEC would be right for you;
- confirm the diagnosis;
- get new treatment plan if the current one does not help;
- ask about other treatment options.

Experimental methods of treatment, for participation in which you must meet the particular requirements. Oncological Research Centers conduct them.
Treatment options for recurrent (relapse) ovarian cancer
Approximately 1/3 of the women can experience a recurrence of cancer within 5 years after treatment. Patients with recurrent ovarian cancer can benefit from additional treatment with second-line therapy (salvage therapy) which includes another surgery and new chemotherapy regimen. Oncologists prescribe different anti-cancer drug considering the possible benefits and potential side effects. It can be single chemotherapy drugs or a combination of them.
There are 2 main strategies for recurrent cancer treatment:
- If a patient did not have a chemotherapy before - surgery and chemotherapy.
- If chemotherapy was conducted - clinical trials and re-treatment complex.
