Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!
I suppose I’d give it a 4.8, really. But that wasn’t down to you. The doctor saw me an hour and a half after the scheduled time. However, the consultation was very informative. Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!

My experience has been entirely negative. The treatment prescribed did not follow the standard protocol for this condition. Under this treatment, the condition only worsened. I was given information about the most effective treatment currently used worldwide. I never received the doctor’s conclusion following the consultation, even though I asked for it several times. And on top of everything else, judging by the result, it wasn’t worth €500. A treatment that doesn’t work, with no documentation whatsoever. Just a conversation with a professor to whom you have to ask a thousand questions and figure out the treatment options for your condition yourself, because he offers nothing and explains nothing.
Speed of service delivery
The treatment recommended by the professor at the Austrian clinic was completely at odds with standard treatment protocols I never received the discharge summary, even though I had asked for it several times

I was not in the hospital. I asked just a second opinion. I was very disappointed, because I was working a lot to translate all the documentation into English, and finally I was discussing with doctor only 10 minutes, and the level of the discussion was very poor. Practically I did not get anything for 400 EUR.

Reply from Professor Johaness Drach:
Second opinion is given on the basis of a thorough analyses of provided medical reports. The procedure lasts as long until all questions of the patient have been clarified. If necessary specialists of other disciplines are also involved. The patient always receive a written statement.

the trip to the clinic was usually. I got advice, paid a doctor, translator and intermediary, did not receive receipts for these payments. But I don’t understand what the bonus actually consisted of, which I ordered through Bookimed and how to really get it. After this trip, I again received a letter about the bonus, but, in my opinion, these letters really do not cost anything.

I had a terrible experience. Dr. Zielinski was dismissive and rushed me, he hasn't answered my questions and he asked me for more tests in order to speak about treatment plans when I was told previously that I didn't need any tests in order to proceed with the consultation and receive a treatment plan. He didn't bother to explain the disease or treatment options. I was looking forward to speak to him and I put so much hope. I needed someone to explain and guide me. I was left with such a bed feeling after the consultation. No empathy and no professionalism. Bookimed apologise but they said that they can't do anything because I paid directly the clinic, even if they are the intermediary they don't take responsibility, so be very careful when booking any services. I wasted 400 euros for 10 minutes that I was trying to make a few questions in order to get some value for the money but the only thing I got was disappointment, frustration, stress and time waste for arguing. I asked for at least to have some questions asked in writing so I could get something back for my money, but they refused, and they said that the consultation was compleated. In the first place, they said that I had a second consultation for free because it wasn't compleated, and then they said it was a mistake and the consultation was compleated. Please be careful where you spend your money and put your hopes because they don't care about taking advantage of ill people in order to make money. Probably are not all the same but my experience was awful and I am very disappointed. Some become doctors because they want to help people and others have no feelings or empathy. I hope this helps whoever is reading and I hope you find a better option than I did with a doctor that cares and will help you. God bless.

The trip to the clinic went smoothly and without incident. We were met at the airport, helped with renting an apartment on a daily basis and introduced us to the clinic. Special thanks to Roman Baranov for his very necessary and qualified assistance, his willingness to help and solve all the problems that arise, both in terms of logistics and in terms of medical service.

Preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism
The medical team was very professional, available at a short notice, explaining the options, and ready to answer any questions. All necessary medical tests have been done quickly. The preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism, overall hospital environment was calming, which helped to reduce the stress associated with surgery and diagnosis. It would be good to have an accurate estimate of costs in advance to make an informed decision.
About Bookimed service
So far I am very satisfied with the support from Bookimed: they have contacted upon request within 24 hours, proposed travel assistance, different options of facilities/doctors for diagnosis, guided through the medical assessment process, made schedules of visits/tests/surgery at the shortest possible time, provided translation of medical documentation, have been accompanying to the visits/tests on spot at the clinic and helped with formalities/German language. Additionally, after the actual estimate of surgery costs have been higher compared to initial estimation, Bookimed was looking for ways to find the savings and negotiate the price. It was very helpful to keep in touch with Bookimed staff almost on a daily basis, with two of them: a remote manager and on-site representative, who co-ordinated well with each other. I would have a small suggestion: to provide a little bit more detail on the schedule of tests/hospital admission and needed preparation.

Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication
Very fast reaction from Bookimed in communication. Initial discussion was for an appointment in AKH and subsequently we have been forwarded to the Privatklinik. The Klinik looks very well managed. We still did not proceed with the treatment and I'm not currently able to share opinion about the Clinic itself and the treatment (will come back soon, once have treatment there). I've been in the Wiener Privatklinik for a consultation. I manage to meet the exact doctors/professors for which I was looking for a contact and did a good job. The whole story was organized and managed by Bookimed with care for the patient. Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication. For us this was very important that we are not losing time.

Our Prostatectomy Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Prostatectomy, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Robotic da Vinci prostatectomy

This minimally invasive procedure uses robotic technology to remove the prostate gland, primarily for prostate cancer treatment.

Pros: Offers enhanced precision with less blood loss and reduced pain compared to traditional surgeries. Faster recovery time, with 90% of patients returning to normal activities within 2 weeks.
Cons: Requires specialized surgical expertise and can involve longer operation times than some alternatives. Limited availability in smaller healthcare facilities.
Effectiveness: 95% success rate in achieving cancer-free margins in early-stage prostate cancer.
Duration: 2-4 hours
Recovery: 2-4 weeks
Best for: Patients with localized prostate cancer seeking precise surgery with minimal downtime.

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)

This prostate surgery involves removing parts of the prostate gland to treat urinary problems due to an enlarged prostate.

Pros: Minimally invasive procedure with quicker recovery time compared to open surgeries. Effective for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia with a high success rate.
Cons: Risk of urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction post-surgery. Requires hospitalization for 1-2 days.
Effectiveness: 80-90% success rate in relieving urinary symptoms.
Duration: Approximately 1-2 hours.
Recovery: About 2-4 weeks.
Best for: Men with moderate to severe urinary issues caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Prices: Cost of Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in Austria from $5,500

Laparoscopic Prostatectomy

It is a minimally invasive procedure for removing the prostate gland, often used in prostate cancer treatment.

Pros: Less blood loss and quicker recovery than open surgery. Hospital stay is reduced to 1-2 days for most patients.
Cons: Requires specialized surgeon skills, which may not be available everywhere. Longer operation time compared to TURP.
Effectiveness: Success rate is above 90% for localized prostate cancer removal.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Recovery: 2-4 weeks
Best for: Localized prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia in patients seeking minimally invasive options.

FAQ about Prostatectomy in Austria

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What surgical techniques are available for a prostatectomy in Austria?

Austria offers advanced prostatectomy techniques including robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy using the da Vinci Xi system, conventional laparoscopy, and transurethral resection. Specialized centers in Vienna and Graz provide minimally invasive options for cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia, prioritizing nerve-sparing precision and rapid recovery.

  • Robotic-assisted prostatectomy: Performs precise excision using da Vinci micro-instruments through tiny keyhole incisions.
  • Conventional laparoscopy: Employs minimally invasive abdominal ports for surgeons to remove the prostate manually.
  • Transurethral resection: Treats benign enlargement by removing obstructing tissue internally without external skin incisions.
  • Open prostatectomy: Reserved for complex oncology cases requiring traditional lower abdominal or perineal access.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient volume data shows Vienna General Hospital serves 630,000 patients annually. This high concentration of complex cases allows Austrian surgeons to master specialized methods like Retzius-sparing robotic approaches. Choosing university-affiliated consultants like Associate Professor Georg Shatzl ensures access to decades of research-backed oncological experience.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that surgeon experience with specific robotic approaches matters more than the machine itself. Most express that prioritizing nerve preservation and long-term continence outcomes guided their final clinic choice.

Are nerve-sparing approaches used to protect potency and continence?

Nerve-sparing prostatectomy in Austria utilizes advanced robotic systems to preserve the neurovascular bundles responsible for erectile function and urinary control. Surgeons prioritize protecting these delicate fibers to accelerate continence recovery and maintain potency while ensuring complete oncological clearance of prostate cancer cells.

  • Robotic precision: Clinics use the da Vinci Xi system for high-magnification nerve mapping.
  • Potency preservation: Sparing cavernosal nerves prevents thermal damage and supports erectile recovery.
  • Continence recovery: Anatomical-structure-sparing techniques protect the external urethral sphincter and pelvic plexus.
  • Oncological balance: Specialists like Georg Shatzl calibrate nerve preservation based on tumor stage.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer laparoscopy, centers like Vienna General Hospital (AKH) provide a significant safety advantage through volume. Handling 630,000 patients annually allows their specialists to master complex bilateral nerve-sparing maneuvers. This experience is vital for navigating the thin fascial layers where nerves often adhere.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that urinary control returns within weeks, though full erectile recovery can take up to 24 months. While nerve-sparing is the primary goal, temporary challenges remain common due to nerve stretching during the procedure.

Which top medical facilities in Austria perform prostate surgery?

Top medical facilities in Austria for prostate surgery include Vienna General Hospital (AKH), Wiener Privatklinik, and Döbling Private Clinic. These centers utilize da Vinci Xi robotic systems for precise, nerve-sparing prostatectomies. Patients access world-class urological oncology care certified by ISO standards and Newsweek rankings.

  • Vienna General Hospital (AKH): Houses one of Europe largest urology departments for complex robotic-assisted surgeries.
  • Wiener Privatklinik (WPK): Features Associate Professor Georg Shatzl, a specialist in reconstructive urologic oncology.
  • Döbling Private Clinic: Offers specialized robot-assisted surgery using advanced da Vinci Xi surgical technology.
  • Leech Private Clinic: Provides access to 67 university professors for high-level urological consultations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While private clinics offer faster access to specialist professors, AKH Vienna handles a massive volume of 630,000 patients annually. This high procedural density often correlates with better outcomes in complex oncological cases. For robotic surgery, Döbling Private Clinic provides a more personalized experience within the PremiQaMed network.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend prioritizing surgeons who manage high volumes of prostatectomies to ensure better recovery of continence and function. Many suggest university-affiliated centers for complex cancer cases despite potential scheduling delays.

What is the typical hospital stay and recovery timeline?

Prostatectomy in Austria typically requires a 1-night hospital stay, though some patients stay 2 to 3 days depending on the surgical approach. Initial recovery involves catheter use for 7 to 14 days, with light activity resuming within 2 to 4 weeks at JCI or ISO-certified facilities.

  • Hospital stay: Most patients stay 1 night; some clinics offer same-day discharge for robotic procedures.
  • Catheter duration: Expect to use a catheter for 7 to 14 days following the surgery.
  • Short-term recovery: Light daily routines and non-strenuous work generally resume within 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Long-term healing: Full functional recovery for urinary and sexual health often takes 6 to 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Vienna General Hospital (AKH) and Döbling Private Clinic utilize the da Vinci Xi system. Data shows this robotic approach often keeps hospital stays to just 24 hours. Patients choosing these high-tech centers in Vienna typically transition to walking within 20 hours post-op.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize arranging home help for the first 10 days. Most confirm that while walking starts quickly, regaining full erectile function is a gradual process lasting over a year.
