How Much Does Rectal resection Cost in Austria?

The cost for a rectal resection in Austria typically ranges from $21,000 to $40,000. The final price depends on the surgical technique, case complexity, and the chosen medical facility. In the US, patients pay $60,000 on average for similar procedures. Austria provides significant savings of approximately 49%. Standard private care usually includes diagnostics, surgery, anesthesia, and 5–7 days of hospitalization.

  • Surgical technique: Minimally invasive or robotic-assisted methods often carry a 20-30% premium.
  • Facility tier: Specialized private hospitals in Vienna frequently charge more for international oncological care.
  • Complexity factors: Advanced cancer cases or redo surgeries increase the resources and time required.
  • Regional location: Vienna serves as the primary medical hub for high-end colorectal surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing Vienna offers access to world-class expertise at prestigious centers like Wiener Privatklinik. This hospital is ranked among the World's Best Hospitals by Newsweek. Patients benefit from surgeons like Dr. Thomas Bachleitner-Hofmann at Confraternitaet Private Hospital. He holds multiple awards, including the Theodor Billroth Prize. Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!
I suppose I’d give it a 4.8, really. But that wasn’t down to you. The doctor saw me an hour and a half after the scheduled time. However, the consultation was very informative. Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!

My experience has been entirely negative. The treatment prescribed did not follow the standard protocol for this condition. Under this treatment, the condition only worsened. I was given information about the most effective treatment currently used worldwide. I never received the doctor’s conclusion following the consultation, even though I asked for it several times. And on top of everything else, judging by the result, it wasn’t worth €500. A treatment that doesn’t work, with no documentation whatsoever. Just a conversation with a professor to whom you have to ask a thousand questions and figure out the treatment options for your condition yourself, because he offers nothing and explains nothing.
Speed of service delivery
The treatment recommended by the professor at the Austrian clinic was completely at odds with standard treatment protocols I never received the discharge summary, even though I had asked for it several times

I was not in the hospital. I asked just a second opinion. I was very disappointed, because I was working a lot to translate all the documentation into English, and finally I was discussing with doctor only 10 minutes, and the level of the discussion was very poor. Practically I did not get anything for 400 EUR.

Reply from Professor Johaness Drach:
Second opinion is given on the basis of a thorough analyses of provided medical reports. The procedure lasts as long until all questions of the patient have been clarified. If necessary specialists of other disciplines are also involved. The patient always receive a written statement.

the trip to the clinic was usually. I got advice, paid a doctor, translator and intermediary, did not receive receipts for these payments. But I don’t understand what the bonus actually consisted of, which I ordered through Bookimed and how to really get it. After this trip, I again received a letter about the bonus, but, in my opinion, these letters really do not cost anything.

I had a terrible experience. Dr. Zielinski was dismissive and rushed me, he hasn't answered my questions and he asked me for more tests in order to speak about treatment plans when I was told previously that I didn't need any tests in order to proceed with the consultation and receive a treatment plan. He didn't bother to explain the disease or treatment options. I was looking forward to speak to him and I put so much hope. I needed someone to explain and guide me. I was left with such a bed feeling after the consultation. No empathy and no professionalism. Bookimed apologise but they said that they can't do anything because I paid directly the clinic, even if they are the intermediary they don't take responsibility, so be very careful when booking any services. I wasted 400 euros for 10 minutes that I was trying to make a few questions in order to get some value for the money but the only thing I got was disappointment, frustration, stress and time waste for arguing. I asked for at least to have some questions asked in writing so I could get something back for my money, but they refused, and they said that the consultation was compleated. In the first place, they said that I had a second consultation for free because it wasn't compleated, and then they said it was a mistake and the consultation was compleated. Please be careful where you spend your money and put your hopes because they don't care about taking advantage of ill people in order to make money. Probably are not all the same but my experience was awful and I am very disappointed. Some become doctors because they want to help people and others have no feelings or empathy. I hope this helps whoever is reading and I hope you find a better option than I did with a doctor that cares and will help you. God bless.

The trip to the clinic went smoothly and without incident. We were met at the airport, helped with renting an apartment on a daily basis and introduced us to the clinic. Special thanks to Roman Baranov for his very necessary and qualified assistance, his willingness to help and solve all the problems that arise, both in terms of logistics and in terms of medical service.

Preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism
The medical team was very professional, available at a short notice, explaining the options, and ready to answer any questions. All necessary medical tests have been done quickly. The preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism, overall hospital environment was calming, which helped to reduce the stress associated with surgery and diagnosis. It would be good to have an accurate estimate of costs in advance to make an informed decision.
About Bookimed service
So far I am very satisfied with the support from Bookimed: they have contacted upon request within 24 hours, proposed travel assistance, different options of facilities/doctors for diagnosis, guided through the medical assessment process, made schedules of visits/tests/surgery at the shortest possible time, provided translation of medical documentation, have been accompanying to the visits/tests on spot at the clinic and helped with formalities/German language. Additionally, after the actual estimate of surgery costs have been higher compared to initial estimation, Bookimed was looking for ways to find the savings and negotiate the price. It was very helpful to keep in touch with Bookimed staff almost on a daily basis, with two of them: a remote manager and on-site representative, who co-ordinated well with each other. I would have a small suggestion: to provide a little bit more detail on the schedule of tests/hospital admission and needed preparation.

Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication
Very fast reaction from Bookimed in communication. Initial discussion was for an appointment in AKH and subsequently we have been forwarded to the Privatklinik. The Klinik looks very well managed. We still did not proceed with the treatment and I'm not currently able to share opinion about the Clinic itself and the treatment (will come back soon, once have treatment there). I've been in the Wiener Privatklinik for a consultation. I manage to meet the exact doctors/professors for which I was looking for a contact and did a good job. The whole story was organized and managed by Bookimed with care for the patient. Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication. For us this was very important that we are not losing time.

FAQ about Rectal resection in Austria

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is a rectal resection and why is it performed?

Rectal resection, or proctectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the rectum to treat malignancies or inflammatory diseases. Surgeons utilize techniques like low anterior resection or abdominoperineal resection to remove diseased tissue, often preserving bowel function through minimally invasive approaches.

  • Primary indications: Treats rectal cancer, severe ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease, or large benign polyps.
  • Surgical techniques: Includes low anterior resection (LAR), proctectomy, and specialized cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC.
  • Functional preservation: Surgeons aim for sphincter-sparing techniques to avoid permanent stomas whenever clinically possible.
  • Recovery timeline: Initial healing takes months, though bowel stabilization can require up to 1 year.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many centers focus solely on tumor removal, leading Austrian specialists like Dr. Thomas Bachleitner-Hofmann integrate cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC for advanced cases. This specialized approach, often refined at institutions like Memorial Sloan-Kettering, offers a vital treatment layer for peritoneal surface malignancies that standard resections might miss.

Patient Consensus: Patients often highlight that recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, particularly regarding sitting discomfort and phantom sensations. Managing expectations around Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) is crucial, as urgency and frequency typically fluctuate for several months post-surgery.

Is a permanent stoma (colostomy) always required after a rectal resection?

A permanent stoma is not always required after rectal resection. Surgeons prioritize sphincter-sparing techniques, such as low anterior resection, when tumors are located in the upper or middle rectum. Permanent colostomies are typically reserved for very low tumors involving the anal sphincter muscles.

  • Sphincter-sparing surgery: Modern techniques like ultra-low anastomosis preserve natural bowel function for high-seated tumors.
  • Temporary diversion: Surgeons often create short-term ileostomies to protect surgical joins during the healing phase.
  • Permanent necessity: Abdominoperineal resection requires a permanent stoma when the entire anal complex is removed.
  • Decision factors: Final stoma status often depends on tumor height and intraoperative pathology findings.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Seeking care in Vienna offers access to highly specialized visceral surgeons like Dr. Thomas Bachleitner-Hofmann. His training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and expertise in minimally invasive colorectal surgery is critical. This high-level specialization often increases the likelihood of successful sphincter-sparing outcomes compared to general surgery centers.

Patient Consensus: While a permanent stoma is manageable through routine irrigation, getting a second opinion is vital for low tumors. Many patients emphasize that the final decision often happens during surgery based on tissue health.

What surgical techniques are commonly used for rectal resection in Austria?

Austrian clinics perform rectal resection using laparoscopic, robotic, and open techniques guided by Total Mesorectal Excision standards. Surgeons utilize minimally invasive approaches in over 70% of cases to ensure nerve-sparing and sphincter-preserving outcomes. Advanced options like robotic-assisted surgery and transanal mesorectal excision provide precision for complex pelvic dissections.

  • Laparoscopic surgery: Standard minimally invasive method used in 72% of Austrian surgical departments.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery: Utilizes da Vinci systems for 3D visualization and precise autonomic nerve preservation.
  • Transanal excision: Bottom-up approach aiding visualization for low tumors in narrow or obese pelvices.
  • Sphincter-sparing techniques: High-priority methods including Intersphincteric Resection to avoid permanent colostomy for patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While robotic surgery is growing, Austrian centers like Wiener Privatklinik prioritize multidisciplinary care by linking visceral surgeons with world-class oncologists. Many top specialists, such as Dr. Thomas Bachleitner-Hofmann, bring elite experience from institutions like Memorial Sloan-Kettering. This ensures advanced techniques like HIPEC are available for complex cases involving peritoneal spread.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that modern global standards are universal in Austria. Success often depends on the surgeon's annual volume and the specific tumor height rather than the country itself.

What is the typical recovery time and hospital stay in Austria for this surgery?

Rectal resection recovery in Austria typically requires 2 to 7 days in the hospital for planned procedures. Most patients regain functional movement within 3 weeks. Full physical stamina and core strength generally return between 2 and 6 months after the operation.

  • Hospital stay: Uncomplicated cases may be discharged within 48 to 72 hours of surgery.
  • Activity milestones: Daily movement and light activity are usually possible after 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Work timeline: Most patients return to desk-based professional roles within 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Technique impact: Minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches often lead to faster discharge than open surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Top Austrian surgeons like Dr. Thomas Bachleitner-Hofmann utilize specialized Swiss-Austrian training in minimally invasive techniques. This focus on laparoscopy at clinics like Wiener Privatklinik significantly reduces initial hospital stays. Choosing these methods often helps patients avoid the prolonged 15-day stays seen with major complications.

Patient Consensus: You may feel ready for daily life before your core strength fully returns. Expect specific restrictions on heavy lifting and twisting for several months after the procedure.

Do Austrian hospitals specialize in high volumes of rectal resections?

Austrian hospitals do not typically specialize in high volumes of rectal resections due to a decentralized healthcare model. Most departments perform roughly 20 cases annually, as Austrian Society of Surgical Oncology data indicates that cases are spread across regional facilities rather than centralized hubs.

  • Annual volume: Regional centers often report medians as low as 13 resections per year.
  • Department capacity: Even major Vienna-based hospitals average only 27 operations per department annually.
  • Specialized techniques: Top visceral surgeons like Thomas Bachleitner-Hofmann offer advanced HIPEC and laparoscopic approaches.
  • Hospital rankings: Institutions like Wiener Privatklinik hold Newsweek World Best Hospital certifications for surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While nationwide volumes appear low, high-tier private clinics in Vienna attract specialized surgeons who focus on complex oncology. Instead of looking for hospital-wide volume, patients should verify if their surgeon belongs to research groups like the Austrian Breast and Colorectal Cancer Study Group.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend choosing established public or private centers in Vienna over smaller rural clinics. They emphasize that while quality is high, finding a multidisciplinary team is essential for oncological success.
