The consultation with the orthopaedic surgeon completely put those doubts to rest
My biggest worry was that I wouldn’t get clear answers or a concrete plan of action, but the consultation with the orthopaedic surgeon completely put those doubts to rest. The doctor was very attentive and took the time to explain everything in detail, which immediately put my mind at ease. Both the surgeon himself and the entire staff worked seamlessly and professionally; I felt supported at every stage. Everything at the clinic is very well organised. The recovery process is still ahead of me, but thanks to this approach, I am confident that I made the right decision. I would definitely recommend this place to others.
The doctor is qualified, and X-rays are available on site. We were seen fairly quickly for an emergency appointment.

According to local patients, this is a highly professional clinic, especially the traumatology department
We asked for help in conducting arthroscopy at the Holy Family Clinic in Rzeszow (Poland). She was promptly admitted, on the same agreed day she was admitted to the hospital, and the next morning she was operated on. According to local patients, this is a highly professional clinic, especially the traumatology department. The only small minus is the long wait for the response of the clinic itself to record the appointment. It seemed that the clinic was not very interested. But when my husband and I got there, we realized that the influx of patients is very high. For this reason, they carefully choose the doctor, the day of the consultation, the MRI, in order to meet the minimum length of the patient's stay in the clinic. We also want to express our gratitude to the Bookimed team. Without her constant support, we would not have been able to achieve anything. Thank you very much! To all who are sick, a speedy recovery!

After the appointment, I had only positive impressions
I want to express my gratitude to Bookimed, the consultant for helping me find a clinic. In my case, it was orthopedics. I was advised to go to the Carolina Hospital in Warsaw. Since I don't know the language very well, especially medical terms, I was provided with an interpreter. Many thanks to the interpreter Svetlana, with her help I was able to communicate with the doctor Andrzej Komor. The doctor is very attentive and professional, he listened and asked about everything related to my health problem, asked a lot of questions about previous treatment. He gave valuable recommendations for the future. After the appointment, I had only positive impressions. I am very grateful for the care and individual approach to the patient!!! It was just a consultation, I still have to have an operation in this clinic. I hope everything will be fine!

"We were very satisfied
I really liked the Clinic. We came from Belarus with a child for a consultation with Dr. Zdanovich. The organization of the trip from the very beginning was under the supervision of Bookimed. The clinic was met by the coordinator Danuta, who helped with the paperwork at the registration desk, accompanied the doctor and helped with translation. Doctor Zdanovich I explained everything in an accessible form on our problem. We were very satisfied. I really liked the work of the Bookimed care department. Everything is coordinated from start to finish. A professional approach to the client. Everything is at the highest level. Thank you for the promptness and attentiveness.

FAQ about Orthopedics in Poland

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How is patient safety ensured during orthopedic procedures in Poland?

Patient safety in Polish orthopedics is ensured through mandatory European Union (EU) standards and national accreditation from the National Centre for Quality Monitoring in Healthcare (CMJ). Clinics focus on infection control, pre-operative screening, and standardized recovery protocols. Facilities like Carolina Hospital also hold specialized FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence certifications.

  • Quality monitoring: Polish hospitals follow CMJ and PASAT frameworks to benchmark clinical safety.
  • International standards: Leading centers maintain ISO 9001:2015 certifications for comprehensive quality management.
  • Pre-surgical screening: Protocols include anesthetic assessments, EKG results, and mandatory infection prevention measures.
  • Device regulation: All implants and surgical medical devices must carry the European CE mark.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that top-rated Polish clinics, such as Carolina Hospital or KCM Clinic, often hire surgeons with extensive international training. These specialists, including Dr. Krzysztof Czerkasow with over 40 years of experience, frequently bring safety protocols from the USA and UK to Poland. This global expertise often results in lower complication rates for complex procedures like hip resurfacing.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that hospitals are very attentive to hygiene and personal problems, providing friendly nursing staff. They also emphasize that having an interpreter present helps them feel much more secure throughout the surgical process.

What are the qualifications and experience of orthopedic surgeons in Poland?

Orthopedic surgeons in Poland must complete 6 years of medical school followed by a 13-month internship. They undergo 5 to 6 years of specialist residency and must pass the State Specialization Exam (PES). Many lead international research in regenerative medicine and sports traumatology.

  • Academic training: Surgeons complete a 6-year Master program plus mandatory 13-month clinical internships.
  • Specialization period: Residency in orthopedics and traumatology lasts 5 to 6 years.
  • Professional titles: Qualified doctors hold the title of Specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology.
  • International exposure: Top specialists like Dr. Andrzej Komor have completed fellowships in the USA and UK.
  • High procedure volume: Experienced surgeons like Dr. Krzysztof Czerkasow perform over 5,000 orthopedic procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Polish orthopedic expertise is highly concentrated in centers that partner with professional sports organizations. For example, Carolina Hospital is a medical partner to the Polish Olympic Committee. Surgeons there, such as Dr. Krzesimir Sieczych, often treat elite athletes. This high-pressure environment ensures they stay updated on the fastest recovery protocols and minimally invasive techniques.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that surgeons in major cities like Warsaw and Rzeszow are highly professional and thorough. They emphasize that while some clinics have high patient volumes, the doctors take time to explain surgical options clearly.

How long should a medical tourist plan to stay in Poland for orthopedic surgery?

Medical tourists should plan a stay of 14 to 21 days in Poland for orthopedic surgery. Major procedures like hip or knee replacements require 3 to 7 days of hospitalization. Patients then undergo 7 to 10 days of initial recovery and rehabilitation before flying home safely.

  • Major joint replacement: Total stay typically ranges from 14 to 21 days for recovery.
  • Arthroscopic surgery: Plan for 10 to 14 days to ensure proper wound healing.
  • Hospital duration: Most inpatient stays last 3 to 7 days depending on complexity.
  • Post-operative care: Allow 7 to 10 days for stitch removal and initial physiotherapy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Carolina Hospital shows that volume impacts scheduling efficiency. High-capacity centers with 40+ doctors often coordinate diagnostics faster. This allows patients to complete pre-op tests and surgery in the first 4 days. This efficiency provides a longer recovery buffer before the return flight.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that early arrival is vital for anesthesia clearance. While some feel ready to leave after 7 days, most recommend staying 14 days. This extra time helps manage swelling and ensures mobility before navigating airports with crutches.

What are the risks and potential complications of orthopedic surgery?

Orthopedic surgery in Poland is highly effective, yet risks include infection, blood clots, and nerve damage. Severe complications like pulmonary embolism are rare. Joint stiffness often follows surgery, requiring intensive rehabilitation. Polish clinics like Carolina Hospital mitigate these risks through ISO-certified quality management and specialized surgical protocols.

  • Infection control: Deep or superficial infections may occur around incisions or internal prosthetic implants.
  • Blood clots: Deep vein thrombosis risks increase during immobility. This requires preventative anticoagulation therapy.
  • Joint stiffness: Reduced range of motion is common. Early physical therapy helps restore joint function.
  • Implant failure: Artificial joints can loosen or wear. Revision surgery may be necessary over time.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While medical success rates are high, recovery speed in Poland often depends on the clinic's patient volume. Data shows facilities like The Holy Family High Specialty Hospital manage over 4,000 patients annually. This high frequency often leads to more streamlined post-operative care and faster access to specialized diagnostic tools like MRI.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that choosing private care ensures better sterile protocols and immediate rehabilitation. One patient emphasized that professional staff and attentive surgeons helped them manage the stress of a foreign medical environment.

Which cities or regions in Poland are preferred for orthopedic procedures?

Warsaw, Krakow, and Jelenia Gora are the primary destinations for orthopedic procedures in Poland. These hubs feature specialized facilities like Carolina Hospital and KCM Clinic. Patients select these regions for advanced joint replacements, sports medicine, and spine surgeries using JCI or ISO-certified standards.

  • Warsaw: The capital hosts Carolina Hospital, a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence for sports orthopedics.
  • Jelenia Gora: KCM Clinic specializes in minimally invasive hip and knee replacements for international patients.
  • Krakow: Home to University Hospital and Sportoklinik, focusing on complex trauma and joint performance.
  • Rzeszow: The Holy Family Hospital offers 3D-printed reconstructions and high-volume specialty orthopedic care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear specialization gap between Polish regions. Warsaw clinics like Carolina Hospital dominate in sports medicine and complex pediatric ACL repairs. Meanwhile, Jelenia Gora attracts the most international patients specifically for joint replacements. KCM Clinic performs over 5,000 procedures, often bundling surgery with diagnostics to minimize stay time.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that major cities like Warsaw and Krakow offer the best English-speaking support. Many mention that clinics often arrange same-day diagnostic scans to speed up the surgical timeline.

What diagnostic work-up is required before traveling?

Pre-travel diagnostic work-up for orthopedics in Poland requires a physical examination and specialized imaging. Patients must provide recent MRI, CT, or X-ray scans. Surgeons often demand a complete blood count and ECG for anesthesia clearance. Most clinics require these documents 4 to 6 weeks before your flight.

  • Imaging requirements: Recent MRI or weight-bearing X-rays are mandatory for joint procedures.
  • Laboratory tests: You need a complete blood count and coagulation profile.
  • Cardiac clearance: Anesthesia requires an ECG and often a chest X-ray.
  • Pre-approval process: Digital DICOM files must be submitted via email for surgeon review.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows that Polish clinics like Carolina Hospital and KCM Clinic maintain high patient volumes, serving up to 20,000+ patients yearly. This high demand means surgeons are very strict about pre-flight documentation. Providing full imaging early can prevent the common 2-day delay where patients must repeat diagnostics locally upon arrival. Many elite sports medicine centers in Warsaw even provide dedicated interpreters to ensure medical history details are perfectly translated before the first consultation.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is vital to send clear digital scans to the surgeon well before booking any flights. They suggest having all bloodwork and heart tests ready to avoid stressful last-minute delays in Poland.

Is post-operative physiotherapy included or arranged for international patients?

Post-operative physiotherapy is typically arranged for international patients in Poland, but it is rarely included in the initial surgery package price. Hospitals like Carolina Hospital and KCM Clinic coordinate the rehabilitation phase individually. Patients usually pay separately for specialized sessions after hospital discharge.

  • Inpatient sessions: Most clinics include initial daily mobilization during the 3–5 day hospital stay.
  • Arrangement process: Surgical teams provide prescriptions and refer patients to specialized local rehabilitation centers.
  • Package inclusions: Standard orthopedic packages cover surgery, anesthesia, and diagnostics, but exclude prolonged physiotherapy.
  • Expert coordination: Dr. Karolina Stepien at Carolina Hospital supervises rehabilitation and check-ups during the recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data suggests clinics with high international volumes, such as KCM Clinic, often negotiate lower rates for local rehab partners. Booking these through the clinic rather than independently can simplify logistics. This is crucial for complex cases like the 900+ BHR hip resurfacings performed at Carolina Hospital.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to budget extra for rehab as it is often a separate cost. One patient shared that while surgery was fully covered, they booked and paid for follow-up physiotherapy independently using a list provided by the clinic.
