Parkinson's disease (PD) is a persistent progressing illness of the brain, which is the main element of the CNS (central nervous system). It influences the black substance neurons of the brain, greatly decreasing dopamine production. Mainly, paralysis of motor function is typical for people of 60 years and older, but first signs could appear much earlier: muscle hypersthenia, slowness in actions.
Parkinson’s disease symptoms
- Resting tremor unwilling trembling when a person is in a rest;
- Olfaction disorder;
- Movement disorders;
- Indistinct speech;
- Emotionless facial expression:
How can Parkinson’s be treated
Muscle rigidity when the muscles are constantly tense. Experts have made significant progress in the fight against PD, although the pathology is considered as incurable and alleviate only few signs.
Neurosurgeons and neurologists in Western Europe, Israel, Turkey and the USA use various methods for PD treatment. The choice of the therapy protocol rely on the grade and degree of functional disorder.
At the early stage of its progress doctors prescribe agents to replace dopamine.
Anticholinergic agents. Effectively fight against the Parkinsonian tremor and muscle rigidity, however are short-term. They are often combined with other agents.
Bromocriptine, pramipexole, pergolide, rolinirol agents. Drugs simulate the dopamine activity. They effectively work for the patients suffering from the body movements slowness and muscle rigidity.
In Germany, Israel and Turkey it is used only at early Parkinsonism. As PD develops too fast, the doses of L-DOPA should be increased constantly for the efficacy of the therapy. This interrelation negatively affects the psychic and physical state of the patient.
Israeli pharmaceuticals has introduced Rasagiline (Azilect), a new effective drug against motor dysfunctions because of Parkinson's.
Treatment of Parkinson's patients has high successful rates: the number of symptoms was decreased while the condition of the patient was significantly improved. Medicinal treatment costs cheaper than surgery and is around $10,000.
Surgeries at Parkinson’s disease
Stereotactic ablation is radio-surgical method when a part of the brain tissue is vaporized.
DBS is a safe minimally invasive surgical intervention. Among its main advantages are high efficiency, a short rehabilitation period of 3-4 days and the small possibility of complications developing.
By virtue of the Deep BS method patients with PD return to their regular life. After the electrodes are put into the brain, sleep mode becomes normal and locomotive function is recovered, so the doses of the medicines are decreased in several times.

The innovative method of Parkinson's disease therapy is harmonic scalpel (MRiFUS). Doctor affects the brain with ultrasonic waves under MRI-control. Surgery is non-invasive, i.e. not surgery requiring. This surgery is specifically effective for uncontrolled tremor treatment.
Transplant of stem cells. The trial method of Parkinson's disease treatment which has been used successfully to treat multiple sclerosis, a hemorrhagic stroke.
Process of the treatment
DBS vitalizes the work of subthalamic nuclei of the brain with high frequency electrode. The electrode is connected to mini stimulator.
The operation is performed in 2 steps:
- Under local anesthesia: doctors insert 2 electrodes to the brain to stimulate it. The procedure is executed at the pre-designated by the computer course;
- Under general anesthesia: electrical stimulator is put into the patient’s chest, electrodes are joined to the stimulator.
The after surgical period takes in average of 3-4 days. Successful surgical treatment of Parkinson's disease allow patients to live a regular life and regain working efficiency. Afterwards, the number and dosage of agents are decreased too, sleep becomes regular, the pelvic organs are restored.
Important to know
DBS method has a list of strict contraindications and requires careful diagnostics prior to the surgery.
PD patients who have indications for treatment by means of surgery, have to undergo examination by specialists of neurology and psychology as well as perform the diagnostic tests as MR imaging, CT, EEG, ECG.
