The Hospital was found in 1870 by German industrial magnate Alfred Krupp to provide medical assistance to the workers at his plants. In 20 years the Clinic started to receive other patients. Special attention was paid to the equipment of the Clinic. Alfried Krankenhaus was one of the first in the world were X-ray device was established.

Modern building of the Hospital was built in 1980. Now it is a research and teaching center for the students of the University of Duisburg-Essen.
